In the vast, serene waters of the southern Maldives, seagulls glide peacefully across the tranquil sea. A new resort island is planned for development here, transforming barren reefs into a tropical paradise. However, beneath the waves lies a formidable challenge: thousands of kilometers of ancient coral reefs, formed over millions of years. These extremely hard geological formations pose a significant technical obstacle. The key difficulty facing marine scientists is how to efficiently and safely excavate these hard coral beds for island reclamation.
Initially, the contractor MTCC leased a dredger from the Netherlands. However, due to the cutter head's insufficient power and inappropriate tooth selection, the excavation proved to be extremely inefficient. After two years, less than 20% of the project had been completed, far below expectations.
In June 2022, MTCC sent a delegation to China to investigate potential solutions. They visited six dredger manufacturers and conducted in-depth feasibility studies upon returning to the Maldives. Ultimately, Shandong Haohai Dredging Equipment Company was selected due to its superior technical solution.
Shandong Haohai Dredging Equipment Company meticulously designed and manufactured a large, customized dredger over a five-month period. The vessel is equipped with a high-hardness alloy cutter head with 1,000 horsepower and a diameter of 2,600 mm. The cutter structure includes reinforced grids and a specially designed flow channel to significantly improve cutting efficiency and material conveyance. The dredger boasts a maximum dredging depth of 25 meters, a flow capacity of 7,000 cubic meters per hour, and an installed power of 6,200 horsepower. It also features a modular assembly design for convenient ocean transport and rapid on-site installation.
Since deployment, the dredger has successfully overcome numerous technical challenges, including transportation difficulties, excavation efficiency, environmental requirements, energy consumption, and tight construction timelines. The project has now entered a phase of high-efficiency progress.
The President of the Maldives and senior government officials have highly praised the performance of the HID dredger. They have actively organized other dredging companies to visit the site for study and promotion, showcasing HID Dredger's advanced technology and experience.
